My two cents on this magic word - Process

Process is really a magic word top management really like to use, especially top management in IT.

Now, every BIG companies are trying to get themselves into the ITIL certification to prove that their IT organization are MATURE.

That said, our IT organization become some really managed operation instead of the playground of technies young guy with the screw drivers on his hands

The concept sounds very great and now we have incident management process to handle incidents, problem management to make sure repeated incidents were investigated properly and find out the root cause. All changes are properly managed by change management board so that changes will not impact the business. Also, we have SLA management, Business continuity management, capacity management,...etc.

We all these processes, we are more "professional" and everyone are "happy"!!!

Now, when we are working with our users who we don't like or we don't know, we will tell them the following...

Do you like to fill in forms?

do you have many forms and reports need to submit?

As an IT guy, you are supposed to be very techie and dealing with machines, software, servers, networks...everyday.

However, when I working in this BIG company, most of my time will be filling in FORMS~~~~

Here's the form I have filled in and I found that I have spent 30% of my time filling forms~~~~~

Account creation request form
Project request form
Account termination form
Quota increase form
Change request form
Problem managment form
Incident Report
Capital equipment request form
Annual leave form
Why there are so many forms in MMC? We need to spend many hours to fill in those form and there are many people spending their time in processing those form and finally, those form become part of the In Tray of the big bosses and never been used....

Probably filling form is some way to reduce the unemployment rate and that's why we have a job~~~~

This is my first post to this blog

Hi all,

How are you? I'm a small potatoes internal IT support for a huge MNC organization in a remote branch offices in Hong Kong.

This is the first time I do my blogging and I hope I could share some view of people working "on the ground" to face users day-to-day in a blog.

I will be writing stories on my blog daily and hopefully these are interesting enough for you to understand the difference of people working in far east.

Cheers

Fei
