The hound of the Baskerville
My working day at the Vet's was dominated the whole day by this... creature. It looked like a Staffordshire Terrier but sounded more like a cross between a hyena and a donkey and behaved like an attention seeking primadonna with Houdinian tendencies. She behaved very well when I was with her, patting and talking to her. But the very second I left the room, the horrendous noise emerged from her and she sounded like nothing I've ever heard before. People in the waiting room looked at me with their eyes wide and I feebly reassured them that "it was only a little dog back there", not a monster from the deep. The creature (called Sweetie, clearly as to show her owners had good sense of humor) was quiet only during the sedation when she was operated on- and the peace and quiet felt luxurious. Until, of course, she woke up and started the howling and cage rattling all over again. I was down at the reception when I suddenly heard loud banging coming from the area where the animal cages were. I rushed in to see what was the cause. For my horror, I discovered that "Sweetie" had broke herself out of her cage, managing to tip the side wall separating the cages- and was in the middle of the next cage- occupied by a cat! Luckily the wall had fallen just between the cat and the dog- so I managed to fish Sweetie out of the cat's cage before the cat had lost any vital body parts. I then took Sweetie's lead and tied her to the radiator temporarily until I had time to fix her a proper cage (preferably in Alcatraz style). After moment's consideration, I added extra piece of rope, just in case. Half and hour later, when I came to check on Sweetie, I was glad that the second rope was in- because Sweetie had shewed her own lead completely broken! When my sift was coming to an end, my colleague arrived and I gave her a handover. I mentioned at length about the nuicances Sweetie had caused troughout the day- and of course, at that time Sweetie was just quietly wagging her tail and looked as innocent as anything.
