Do We Remain A Nation of Service?

Do We Remain A Nation of Service? -

Our nation was founded as one wherein government is by the people. It is our duty and responsibility as citizens to lead and to serve our country. Whatever we were, are and become happens because of what we say and do. Government's job is to provide the means by which we citizens can build the nation we want.

Today, on the anniversary of 9/11, we are being reminded of our duty to serve. Headlines tell us that our Presidential candidates are calling us to serve. Meanwhile, in NYC a two-day conference of 500 leaders focuses on social change and service.

My question to you: Are we a nation dedicated to service or one that has become complacent on a diet of entitlements and one made up mostly of citizens who willingly secede responsibility to government?

  • What would our nation look like today if the Founding Fathers had believed government knows best? Are we becoming a nation of government knows best?
  • Where would we be without the millions upon millions who have volunteered and sacrificed for causes greater than themselves over the past 300-plus years?
  • What do the values of The Greatest Generation teach us? Do we remember who that Generation was and what they did for America?
  • Can or should we go back to being a citizen nation where service matters more than individual comforts and happiness?
  • Do you believe in service to country?
  • Do you think we should encourage all Americans to serve?
  • Would you agree with mandatory service wherein young people could choose between a variety of options, including military service?

I could give you my thinking about this but in the spirit of a citizen nation that speaks its mind on this day of remembrance, I would rather turn this forum over to you? I invite you to leave your thoughts as comments or to offer a guest post. All ideas and thoughts that are written with respect and absent anger or hate are welcome.
